Nichole Jefferson named as next patient voting member of KPMP Steering Committee

The Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) is thrilled that Nichole Jefferson will serve as the next patient member of the KPMP Steering Committee.

Nichole Jefferson, who currently resides in Dallas, TX, was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in 2003 and experienced both forms of dialysis (HD and PD). On June 12, 2008, she received the gift of life, a kidney transplant. Due to the many obstacles she faced following her transplant ,Nichole realized that a transplant was simply another form of treatment and not a cure. This realization initiated her enthusiasm for advocacy. Nichole shares her story with her community and underserved populations and speaks with legislators regarding the need for early detection and other issues relating to chronic kidney disease.

Nichole received a high KDPI kidney on April 23, 2020. This kidney has been truly amazing for her and she speaks to others regarding the acceptance of high risk kidneys. Nichole is the President of Home Dialyzors United (HDU) Board of Directors in 2017. She was also appointed by Texas Governor, John Abbott to his Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force. In addition, she has served on the Kidney Precision Medicine Project Community Engagement Committee and the NIDDK APOLLO Community Advisory Board.

As a member of the KPMP Community Engagement Committee for the last 5 years, Nichole has provided valuable and actionable input that has driven protocol changes, survey enhancements, and better KPMP participant engagement. Her leadership and values led her to be chosen as a member of the KPMP Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is the primary governing body of the consortium, with voting positions held by site principal investigators, and patient and NIDDK representatives.  KPMP is committed to patient engagement in all aspects of the consortium, and have included patients on all committees, including the Steering Committee, since its inception in 2017. The consortium is honored that Nichole Jefferson will serve as our next patient voting member, and grateful to Keith Brown who served in this position for the last 5 years.
